Mike,

One thing that I'd like the software to include is a "Pathcast" feature where someone could click on a storm and have it estimate when a storm is going to hit.

With such an addition, you'd take a serious bite out of competing products like StormLab, where that is available, only in the professional version.

The GRR 3 product alreadt has the database of towns in it that can be used so. a pathcast/storm forecast should be easily done.

I believe that such an addition would be a perfect addition to an otherwise well done product.

I, for one, am very pleased that you are doing this project and, well, I've been hooked since day 1. Only thing I use StornLab for now, since their creator is getting greedy, if to do a quick check on the "Free Text Messages" from NWS sites that explain if a radar is undergoing repairs or routine stuff.

Also, I love that your software saves 8 minutes of time here. StornLab is constantly 10 minutes or more behind and that's potentially deadly for people relying on that product. Your software gets the data MUCH quicker and allows me to pinpoint with a higher degree oc accuracy where a storm will hit. I recently used it with some imported shape files to warn my sister-in-law of some heavy/borderline severe storms.

My only "gripe" M-25 in Michigan, at Unionville, MI doescn't gracefully curve to the N, it's is a 90 degree turn. I realize this might not be your fault, though, and does NOT detract from my enjoyment of the program to the point that as soon as all the features are "locked in", I will gladly work with you for help files.

Sincerely yours,
Dan Trigona,
Division Director
USAWeather National Nowcast Division.

Are you referring to wedge-shaped storm tracks or to a table of city names showing arrival times?

I don't understand how StormLab could be so far behind when acquiring data. Have you run the two apps side-by-side to see when the updates occur? Have you set your computer's time to the NIST atomic clock? Level3 internally synchronizes to the atomic clock so it doesn't matter if your computer clock is synced or not. If StormLab really is that far behind, you should report it as a bug.

I use the NWS road shapefiles to generate my base files. Maybe they smoothed out the corner when generating their base maps???

The second option, Mike, is what I'm curious about for a future version of the software

The Stornlab folks get their radar source from a different source than you guys...It's not a bug in the program.

Dunno, to be honest with you.. It's not that big of a deal to me, just something to point out. I sort of realized that the source shapefiles were off. Where can I locate the NWS shapefiles, though???

The NWS shapefiles are here:

http://www.nws.noaa.gov/geodata/

Level3's base roads are derived from the "Major Roads of the United States" shapefile. I categorize, group, and sort them into a memory-mappable format when I create the base road file.
